North Korea Jamming Incident; LightSquared Issue

My mailbox is currently overflowing with comments and questions concerning rampant rumors that in the March 2011 time frame a U.S. military reconnaissance aircraft was forced to land during an annual major east Asian military exercise, known as Key Resolve, due to GPS jamming. The jamming reportedly took place along the northern portion of the 684-mile long Korean peninsula, with the jamming supposedly originating with the North Koreans. The jamming scenario should come as no surprise, but it is the emergency or forced landing due to loss of a GPS signal among other supposed “facts” with which I take issue.

Spoofing Detection and Mitigation with a Moving Handheld Receiver

A single spoofing source has a different spatial signal distribution from the authentic GPS signal. An antenna array can estimate the spatial distribution of the received signal and thus discriminate the spoofing signal from the authentic one. Moving a handheld receiver with a single antenna during signal capture snapshots produces a form of a synthetic array, highly effective in discriminating spoofing signals sourced from a point-source jammer.

A packed audience attended the National Physical Laboratory in the United Kingdom for a February 23 meeting titled, “GPS Jamming and Interference: A Clear and Present Danger,” organized by the Digital Systems Knowledge Transfer Network. In his keynote address, David Last described a dark, silent and dangerous world without GPS. His final insight was this: “Navigation is no longer about how to measure where you are accurately.
